September's Flower

Every month has a ‘birth month’ flower associated with it. The flower for September is the aster.

Asters bloom late summer into early fall making them a perfect symbol of autumn’s arrival.

Asters grow well in the garden but they’re also used as a cut flower in bouquets and arrangements. Part of their popularity stems from the multitude of colours they come in – white, red, pink, purple, lavender, blue and yellow.

While these flowers resemble daisies – in fact another name for them is ‘Michaelmas daisy’ – they’re actually a member of the sunflower family.

In addition to being ‘September’s flower”, asters are also the flower to mark a 20th wedding anniversary. Their meaning in the language of flowers is ‘patience and elegance’, making them that much more appropriate as a gift for these special occasions..
